It's a Beautiful Life

I knew this day would finally come.  The day when I cried after getting off the phone with a client due to being overwhelmed and so honoured to be making a cake for a huge milestone in their life.  This happened when I was asked to make 3 mini cakes to celebrate a birthday, a graduation and a clean bill of health for a very special, incredibly sweet client of mine.

It is orders like this that make me so overjoyed and in love with what I do.  My cakes were ordered to celebrate a monumental, joyous milestone in her young beautiful life and I could not of been happier to in a little way be a part of it.

Duct Tape & Plaid

I love plaid shirts.  I love them in summer with cute shorts and some cowboy boots.  I love them in fall with jeans and some Chuck Taylors and I love them in winter with some riding boots and leggings.  Plaid shirts may be one of my favourite pieces of clothing.  You can imagine my delight to begin to tackle this plaid shirt cake inspired by my clients "Red Green Show"-esq father who was to soon be celebrating his retirement.

Not only was the plaid shirt cake itself a great representation of her Dad but adding all other little touches around the cake board including a fighter plane, a Tim Hortons mug and a CN logo made this a great centre piece at the retirement party.

Getting Sassy

As it is probably obvious by now I love cakes that are cute, whimsical, elegant, sophisticated and all things pretty.  However, every once and a while getting sassy with cake is fun too.  Which is exactly what I did when my client requested this risque cake....

Plastic surgery in my future?  No thank you, I think I'll be sticking to cake.

I and Love and You

Why not say it with cake?  That is what came to mind when I sat down to design these wordy little cakes.  These little cakes were inspired by a scrapbook made by one of my clients for Mothers day which was made with paper filled with words of love.

I adore when a cake has a personal touch that will speak to the heart of the person that cake is for and I think these little script cakes did just that!

Pretty Things in Small Packages

I have always kind of had this obsession with mini things, the travel item isle at Shoppers gets me more excited than I care to admit.  Everything is automatically cuter when they are mini (babies are mini and cute, case and point).  So you can imagine how much heart gushed over these mini couture cakes.  I adored everything about these couture cuties from the colour schemes to the deigns and their darling 'fit in the palm of your hand' size.  Cutie cakes for the win!

Ps This my cake loving friends is what I like to refer to as a cake murder scene.  I can assure you as horrible as it looks, they were thoroughly and happily enjoyed (eaten with her hands and all)

Touchdown!

I've grown up in a family filled with sweet tooths and sport enthusiast.  I can proudly say that I have carried on the family tradition with both sugar and sport being two things close to my heart.  Naturally anytime I have a client that request a sports theme cake I do a little fist pump at my computer and start planning.

This New England Patriot themed cake was for a clients boyfriend's birthday who is a HUGE Pats fan.  The pressure was on to please this NFL lover and I can happily say, it passed the test!

Pretty Things

As I have become more involved in the cake world it amazing how I see cake in EVERYTHING around me.  Whether it is a pretty pattern on a napkin, detailing on a dress or a dazzling coloured eye shadow.  It seems as though every where I look there is something beautiful that inspires me to create something beautiful out of sugar and cake.

Not only am I inspired by things around me but people around me as well.  I am so blessed to be dear friends with the talented Britney who in my mind is the queen of all things floral.  She is the uber talented designer and owner of Fache Forward Designs and I am so lucky to have such an amazing talent to inspire me daily in what I do.  Pretty girls like pretty things and I think that speaks volumes about Brit and myself, just check out these amazing floral cupcakes she surprised me with one unassuming afternoon.

Little City Girl in the Big City

I'm a prairie girl.  I have lived my whole life on the prairies and this is where I call home.  So it surprised even me when I decided to kick off my cowboy boots and leave my little kitchen on the prairies to head to the big city of Toronto.  Why Toronto you ask?  Well because Toronto is home of the Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts and I wanted to go!  I packed up and headed out on a six week cake journey to soak up everything I could and come home full of inspiration and new talents, and that is exactly what I did.  So thought I would share some really exciting pieces I got to work on during my time and Bonnie Gordon....

New decorating techniques were coming at me from all angles such as modelling chocolate, brush embroidery and the dated/gotti but somewhat pretty (somewhat) Lambeth piping.

Sugar work was definitely something I never thought I would ever get my hands.  Not going to lie, didn't love this class, on but once all was said and done it was a pretty interesting skill to learn.

O how my heart skipped a beat when it came to sugar flower day!  A phenomenal teacher helped us guide us in making some pretty spectacular flowers!

This might of been the part of the course I was most looking forward too.  Quite the challenge but figure modelling was a great experience.

Technically we were supposed to leave our topsey turvy cakes undecorated but I mean lets be serious, me leave a cake undecorated? I think not!

When we got to our sculptured cakes class, hockey playoff were right around the corner so naturally a Claude Giroux Flyers ball cap was totally fitting!

Now I got quite a lot of scuff from my cake girls when I RANDOMLY chose this Maple Leaf themed cake as my final project.  No joke...random draw... hockey girl gets the hockey cake.

I don't know if I have ever fallen in love with one of my cakes as much as this one.  This wedding cake stole my heart the minute I got the description handed to me.  It still sits in a perfect placed spot in my house and when I walk past it, it still makes me smile.

All in all I can truthfully say that taking this prairie girl out of her country roots and putting her in the big city was well worth the trip!

Sit Back... And Enjoy The Ride

Sometimes I let the hectic, non stop, around the clock pace of my life get the best of me.  Emails to be answered, cakes to be decorated, deliveries to be made and then when I can fit in time, sleep.  I love this crazy little cake machine that is Laugh Love Cakes but every once and a while I have to remind myself to 'Enjoy the Ride'.  I'm really excited to be back blogging and sharing all things cake with all of you!

I figure what better way to get you caught up with our busy little kitchen than to share some cakes with you that have left our kitchen over the last little while, hope you enjoy!
